With autism presenting a number of communication challenges, the recently enhanced services are designed to help people with the condition better communicate at school, at home, and in the community.
A 2020 report from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicated that approximately 1 in 54 US children is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association describes the communication difficulties that people with autism can experience, including understanding and using words, understanding and using gestures, and understanding directions.
Having qualified therapists that are fully licensed by the California State Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, High Desert Speech and Language Center now provides a wide range of evidence-based therapeutic approaches for the treatment of autism-related communication challenges.
The center takes a multi-stage approach to the provision of therapy. In the first instance, clients are advised to seek a referral from their primary care provider. Specialists will then conduct a detailed child or adult evaluation in order to determine the severity of the condition, as well as an appropriate course of action.
Treatment approaches may include any combination of voice therapy, articulation therapy, language therapy, and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).
AAC, in particular, is a therapeutic method used for children and adults who may have more severe speech or language problems. As the name suggests, this therapy focuses on other avenues of communication such as sign language, gestures, pictures, and technological devices such as tablets.
In addition to traditional therapies, High Desert Speech and Language Center also provides a range of non-standard services including accent and dialect training, lip-reading, and corporate speaking instruction.
A company representative stated: “Our center uses evidence-based therapies and programs to help our clients achieve their maximum potential. Clients both young and mature can take full advantage of home therapy programs to speed recovery and or progress towards speech and/or language goals.”
