A Study Highlights Link In Between Acne and Depression

(Newswire.net — September 6, 2021) Orlando, FL — Depression is undeniably common today, and it continues to affect more and more people.

Data shows that around 9 percent of people are affected by acne, which might be common in pre-teens, teens, and young adults, but it can affect people of all ages. There are various factors found to contribute to the development of acne and one is genes.

This means that having parents with acne increases one’s odds of the condition. There are other factors like hormone level changes, such as during puberty or menstrual cycles.

There have been many studies that looked into the impacts of this mental health issue or its contributing factors.

A study was carried out and published in The British Journal of Dermatology.

This analysis actually included data from The Health Improvement Network (THIN) (1986-2012), which is a large primary care database in the United Kingdom.

It is an analysis of one of the largest electronic medical records databases in the world. It has been found that acne patients had a significantly increased odds of developing major depression. However, only in the first 5 years after being diagnosed with acne.

The researchers particularly found that the odds of major depression were highest within one year of acne diagnosis. More particularly, there was a 63 percent higher risk compared to those without acne — and decreased thereafter.

The findings particularly say it is vital for physicians to monitor mood symptoms in those struggling from acne. It is also best they initiate prompt treatment for this mental health issue or seek consultation from a psychiatrist when needed.

According to lead author Dr. Isabelle Vallerand, of the University of Calgary, in Canada, this study highlights an important link between skin disease and mental illness. Given the risk of depression was highest in the period right after the first time a patient presented to a physician for acne concerns, it shows just how impactful our skin can be towards our overall mental health.

“For these patients with acne, it is more than a skin blemish — it can impose significant mental health concerns and should be taken seriously,” she added.

An increasing number of research studies are exploring the various aspects of depression, and these include its potential remedies. Some nutrients like B vitamins could be particularly helpful in delivering antidepressant benefits. Scientists are increasingly investigating the mental health benefits of these nutrients.

Intake of formulas like Divine Bounty B Vitamin Complex may be helpful in enhancing general mental health. Some studies have shown these nutrients work wonders in reducing symptoms of anxiety or depression.

It contains Choline, Pantothenic acid, Biotin, Vitamin B12, Folic Acid, Niacin, Riboflavin, Thiamin, and vitamin B6. (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B07414752B)
