Prevailing strategies in addressing workplace bias are believed to be ineffective, as they are based on incorrect assumptions. Bias navigation expert, Buki Mosaku is offering an original approach that puts mutual respect at the forefront.

The newly announced ‘Let’s Start’ campaign challenges the divisive mindset that categorises individuals as either “guilty perpetrators” or “hapless victims”. According to Mr Mosaku, this way of thinking further reinforces differences instead of empowering the people who need help.

The campaign introduces a novel approach, which is to equip both “victims” and “perpetrators” with the skills to navigate the “inevitability” of workplace bias. By doing so, Mr Mosaku believes that its impact within organisations can be negated and, over time, be eliminated fully.

Traditional approaches fail to address a number of concerns, according to Mr Mosaku. For example, they do not empower those with real grievances, as this role is typically taken upon by a “majority” within an organisation. Furthermore, they tend to ignore the reality and “self-perpetuating” impact of reverse bias or unconscious discrimination towards a perceived dominant group.

Mr Mosaku’s approach has also garnered support from several professionals and business leaders. One executive health coach lauded it for moving the conversation away from the belief that it is “us and them”.
