Two Fasting Diets Found to Be Effective for Weight Loss

Researchers from the University of Illinois at Chicago carried out a new study and found that two daily fasting diets are effective for weight loss. These diets are also known as time-restricted feeding diets. 

This research reported findings from a clinical trial involving the comparison of a 4-hour time-restricted feeding diet and a 6-hour time-restricted feeding diet to a control group. 

According to Krista Varady, this is the first human clinical trial to compare the effects of two popular forms of time-restricted feeding on body weight and cardiometabolic risk factors.

Varady is a professor of nutrition at the UIC College of Applied Health Sciences and the corresponding author of the story.

The findings of this interesting research were published in Cell Metabolism.

In this study, the investigators had participants in the 4-hour time-restricted feeding diet group eat only between the hours of 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Further, the subjects belonging to the 6-hour time-restricted feeding diet group were asked to eat only between the hours of 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. 

Further in both study groups, the subjects were permitted to eat whatever they wanted during the 4-hour or 6-hour eating period. 

It is worth noting that during the fasting hours, the participants were instructed to only consume water or calorie-free beverages. 

The findings reveal that participants in both daily fasting groups lessened calorie intake by about 550 calories every day simply by sticking to the schedule and lost about 3 percent of their body weight. 

It has further been found that there were reductions in insulin resistance and oxidative stress levels among participants in the study groups when compared with the control group.
