A Published Study Reveals Link Between Sleep Issues and Increased Premature Death

One study was carried out and published by the Journal of Sleep research. 

In this study, the investigators looked into data of half a million middle-aged UK participants who were asked if they had trouble falling asleep at night or woke up in the middle of the night. 

They found that those with frequent sleep issues are at a heightened odds of dying compared to those without sleep issues. It is worth noting that the risk is particularly applicable to diabetics.  

In the nine years of the research, the investigators found that the subjects were 87 percent more susceptible to dying from any cause compared to those with diabetes or sleep disturbances. Further, individuals with diabetes and sleep issues were 12 percent more susceptible to dying over this period.

The first author of the study is Malcolm von Schantz, Professor of Chronobiology from the University of Surrey. 

“Although we already knew that there is a strong link between poor sleep and poor health, this illustrates the problem starkly,” the professor said.

“The question asked when the participants enrolled does not necessarily distinguish between insomnia and other sleep disorders, such as sleep apnoea. Still, from a practical point of view, it doesn’t matter. Doctors should take sleep problems as seriously as other risk factors and work with their patients on reducing and mitigating their overall risk,” he added.

The study has also shown that diabetes alone was actually linked with a 67 percent heightened odds of mortality. However, it increased by 87 percent for participants with diabetes combined with frequent sleep problems.
