Dance Awakening offers classes beginning at 7 PM. Other classes offered during the week include Zumba and Brazilian Zouk. Saturday mornings feature both Zumba and a special “Mom and Me” Zumba class on the first Saturday of every month, from 10-11 am.

Salsa is extremely popular globally, especially in Latin America, North America, Europe, and West Africa. While its early manifestations are rooted in Cuba, it took hold in New York in the 1970s, driven by the local Cuban and Puerto Rican communities. Salsa is governed by a few general rules such as 3 steps to 4 beats. While there are a variety of styles, the instructors at Dance Awakening focus first on the basics, such as timing, movement, and partner synergy.

Bachata is a slower dance style than salsa, with an 8 beat phase, requiring very different footwork. Its a style that is rapidly gaining followers worldwide, as evidenced by the increased interest shown by the students at Dance Awakening. Learning Bachata, like most dancing styles, requires attention and focus. Students learn to isolate particular body regions such as the shoulders, and knees while gradually creating muscle memory.
