A Study Shows Obesity Exacerbates a Number of Causes of Death

A study was carried out and published on 24th October in PLOS Genetics.

This research was carried out by the investigators from Cecilia Lindgren of the University of Oxford and colleagues.

They performed the study trying to validate whether excess weight might result in or exacerbate other causes of death aside from type 2 diabetes and heart disease. 

In identifying additional causes of death worsened by obesity, they carried out an analysis exploring cause-and-effect relationships. It was done through the use of genetic data and three measures of obesity from 195,041 men and 228,466 women in the UK Biobank. 

This analysis has shown that obesity is a contributor to a long list of health issues. These include type 1 and 2 diabetes, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, coronary artery disease, lung cancer, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, chronic liver disease, and kidney failure. 

While it is true that obesity leads to type 2 diabetes in both men and women, it is also worth noting that women had a higher risk of type 2 diabetes as compared to men. Further, men experienced a greater risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and chronic kidney disease.

According to the first author, Jenny Censin, this study shows just how harmful carrying excess weight can be to human health, and that women and men may experience different diseases as a result.

Overall, the study findings reveal that obesity leads to or contributes to most of the top causes of death worldwide. It is important to stress that the effects of obesity are found to be different in women and men.
