A Published Study Highlights Link Between Hot Tea and Glaucoma

In this research, it has been found that consumption of a cup of hot tea at least once a day may result in a significantly reduced odds of glaucoma, which is a serious eye health issue.

In this research, the investigators looked into data from the 2005-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in the US. 

This nationally representative annual survey involved about 10,000 individuals including interviews, physical examinations, and blood samples. It is worth noting these are designed to gauge the health and nutritional status of adults and children in the United States. 

It has been found that among the 1678 participants who had full eye test results, including photos, 84 adults or 5 percent of them had developed the condition.

The subjects were asked how often and how much they had drunk caffeinated and decaffeinated drinks using a validated questionnaire. These included soft drinks and iced tea, over the preceding 12 months.

Data has shown that compared to those who didn’t drink hot tea every day, those who did had a reduced glaucoma risk.

The investigators also found that hot tea drinkers were less likely to have glaucoma by 74 percent, even after taking account of potentially influential factors, such as diabetes and smoking.
