( — October 29, 2021) Orlando, FL — Medications like antidepressants are widely resorted to nowadays. These treatments are undeniably helpful, but it is worth realizing that their use comes with adverse effects.

Scientists carried out a study and found that older women and men who took selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, which is a class of antidepressants, may have a heightened rate of bone loss.

Dr. Susan Diem says that people currently on SSRIs should not stop their medicines based on these findings.

Dr. Diem is the lead author of the study looking at women and assistant professors of medicine at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine.

The results of both studies are published in the June 25 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.

In the United States, SSRIs account for nearly two-thirds of antidepressant prescriptions. They work by inhibiting a certain protein that transports serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter involved in sleep and depression.

It is worth mentioning that receptors for serotonin have been recently found in bone.

“This led to the question of whether the drugs could have an effect on bone,” Diem said.

Researchers warn that bone mineral density is actually a marker of osteoporosis.

“This work needs to be confirmed in other populations, and the real question is whether the drugs have an effect on rates of fracture and that we could not address,” Diem continued.

Today, experts continue to investigate the ways to help fight depression. The good news is that there are actually proven ways, including the use of certain nutrients like the macromineral called magnesium.

According to researchers, there are many people nowadays who are deficient in this mineral. Interestingly, some experts link this insufficiency with the high prevalence of depression.

There are various possible reasons why many end up being deficient in this mineral. For instance, factors like the use of antacids and caffeine as well as food processing have been found to contribute to a reduction in magnesium absorption.

Scientists suggest that in multiple research studies, magnesium has demonstrated its usefulness in alleviating the symptoms of depression. The depressed participants have even reported reductions in muscle cramps, pains, aches, constipation, and reduced headaches during the entire magnesium trial.

Individuals who want to ward off depression naturally may increase their intake of this nutrient. It is worth realizing that such a nutrient is also associated with various healing effects, and may even aid in fighting various diseases.
