Experts Time and Again Warn Against the Skyrocketing Antibiotic Consumption in Livestock

(Newswire.net — November 4, 2021) Orlando, FL — Antibiotic resistance is undeniably a global health issue that needs to be addressed. There are many causes of this problem, and these include antibiotic use in livestock.

A recent report has shown that the increasing appetite for animal protein in developing countries led to a smorgasbord of antibiotic intake for livestock. As a result, it has nearly tripled the incidence of antibiotic resistance in disease-causing bacteria easily transmitted from animals to humans.

The findings of this research were published in the journal Science.

This study was carried out by researchers from ETH Zurich, the Princeton Environmental Institute (PEI), and the Free University of Brussels.

They gathered almost 1,000 publications and unpublished veterinary reports from around the globe in creating a map of antimicrobial resistance in low- to middle-income countries. They concentrated on the bacteria Escherichia coli, Campylobacter, Salmonella, and Staphylococcus aureus.

It is worth noting that all of these bacteria cause serious diseases in animals and humans. The researchers stress that between 2000 and 2018 and in chickens, there was an increase in the proportion of antibiotics exhibiting rates of resistance above 50 percent in developing countries from 0.15 to 0.41 and in pigs, from 0.13 to 0.34.

“This paper is the first to track antibiotic resistance in animals globally and it finds that resistance has gone up dramatically during the past 18 years,” said co-author Ramanan Laxminaraya.

Laxminaraya is a senior research scholar in PEI. The research was supported by the PEI Health Grand Challenge program and included co-author Julia Song, a graduate of Princeton’s Class of 2018 and a past PEI research assistant.

“We certainly do want higher-protein diets for many people, but if this comes at the cost of failing antibiotics, then we need to evaluate our priorities,” Laxminarayan said.

More studies are still underway to look into the various aspects of antibiotic resistance. Experts time and again warn against the misuse or overuse of antibiotics, which are primarily resorted to by individuals suffering from UTIs.

The increase in the demand for antibiotics is even driven by the skyrocketing rates of infection. Experts strongly recommend some all-natural remedies helpful in warding off UTIs, and these include the intake of cranberry juice.

It may also be helpful to use UTI-fighting all-natural remedies like Divine Bounty D-mannose, which is known for its high potency and purity. This amazing formula is used widely by individuals suffering from recurrent infections who do not want to be exposed to the dangerous effects of antibiotic misuse or overuse. (https://www.amazon.com/D-Mannose-600mg-Cranberry-Dandelion-Extract/dp/B01LX5KGF0)
