Study Reveals Yoga and Meditation Lessen Chronic Pain Levels

In the United States, this common and serious medical condition called chronic pain is estimated to affect about 100 million individuals. This correlates with the annual costs of roughly $635 billion. 

A study was carried out and it was published in the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association. 

This research subjected the participants to an eight-week mindfulness-based stress reduction course, which has been found to produce significant improvement in levels of depression, pain, and disability. 

It is worth noting that a mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) course benefited patients with chronic pain and depression. 

A majority of the study respondents or 89 percent actually reported that the course helped them look for ways to better cope with their pain. Further, 11 percent of them remained neutral. 

This small-scale study was carried out in a semi-rural population in Oregon, which is a place where there are common issues of addiction, affordability, and access to care. 

According to Cynthia Marske, DO, people have lost hope because, in most cases, chronic pain will never fully resolve.

Marske is an osteopathic physician and director of graduate medical education at the Community Health Clinics of Benton and Linn County. 

“However, mindful yoga and meditation can help improve the structure and function of the body, which supports the process of healing,” said Marske.

The use of pain relievers is widely resorted to by individuals who suffer from chronic conditions like arthritis. This type of medication may be helpful but is also linked with side effects. Reports reveal that long-term or frequent use of pain relievers like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may increase the odds of gastrointestinal bleeding and stroke.
