(Newswire.net — November 11, 2021) Orlando, FL — The scientific community has been conducting research studies to investigate the impacts of getting adequate sleep. Some studies suggest sleep deprivation could produce negative brain health outcomes.
One study was carried out and published in Neurology. Boston
In this research, which was carried out by researchers from the University School of Medicine (BUSM), the researchers stress the relevance for physicians to take into account the link between sleep conditions and cognitive impairment in the elderly.
It is worth noting that daytime sleepiness is highly common in the elderly coming in the prevalence rates of up to 50 percent. It is worth noting that daytime sleepiness is caused by sleep-disordered breathing (SDB).
According to experts, SDB pertains to a disruption of normal breathing during sleep. When it happens, it leads to recurrent awakenings and subsequent excessive daytime sleepiness.
In the “HypnoLaus Study,” the investigators looked into an older population (over the age of 65), with and without cognitive impairment. They conducted sleep studies on these groups and found that the group suffering from cognitive impairments had more sleep disturbances attributed to SDB.
Corresponding author Sanford Auerbach, MD, says that though this does not necessarily mean that sleep apnea causes cognitive impairment in the elderly, it does highlight the association,” explained
Auerbach is an associate professor of neurology and psychiatry at BUSM and director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Boston Medical Center.
He added that while there is a causal link between SDB /obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and cognitive impairment in the elderly, the association is not entirely clear.
“Nevertheless, it does raise the issue that clinicians evaluating OSA in the elderly should screen for cognitive impairments. Furthermore, clinicians evaluating cognitive impairment in the elderly should also screen their patients for sleep disturbance and OSA,” Auerbach explained.
Scientists continue to carry out studies to look into the various techniques potentially helpful in warding off issues linked with cognitive health. There are natural remedies like the use of a medicinal mushroom called lion’s mane that may be helpful.
It is worth noting that in some studies, lion’s mane has been found to have neuroprotective, cardiovascular-health enhancing, anti-inflammatory, cognitive-decline-fighting, nerve repairing, blood-pressure-lowering, immunity-boosting, cholesterol-regulating, and weight management properties.
Studies suggest it doesn’t just have sleep-enhancing potentials, but may also be protective of cognitive health. It is obtained widely today through the use of formulas like Divine Bounty Lion’s Mane.
