(Newswire.net — November 15, 2021) Orlando, FL — Healthy dietary and lifestyle improvements have long been known to be vital for various aspects of health. Some studies even show they may produce liver health benefits.

A study carried out by the Penn State researchers has shown that the combination of exercise and intake of green tea lessened the severity of obesity-related fatty liver disease by 75 percent in mice fed a high-fat diet.

The findings have led the investigators to suggest that it could be a potential health technique for people.

According to Joshua Lambert, who is an associate professor of food science, the outcome is important. This is due to the fact that nonalcoholic fatty live disease is considered to be a significant global health issue that is projected to worsen.

By 2030, fatty liver disease is expected to affect over 100 million people and this is due to the high prevalence of certain risk factors, such as obesity and type 2 diabetes.

This study involved feeding mice with a high-fat diet for 16 weeks. It has been shown mice that consumed green tea extract and exercise regularly had just a quarter of the lipid deposits in their livers compared to those seen in the livers of a control group of mice.

Further, those treated with exercise alone or green tea extract had approximately half as much fat in their livers as the control group.

The findings of this research were published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry.

The investigating team actually measured the protein as well as fat content in the feces of mice. It has been found that consumption of green tea extract and regular exercise led to improvements in fecal lipid and protein levels.

“By examining the livers of these mice after the study concluded and by screening their feces during the research, we saw that the mice that consumed green tea extract and exercised actually were processing nutrients differently — their bodies were handling food differently,” Lambert said.

Aside from exercise, some nutrients like B vitamins may be beneficial for the liver. Studies suggest the intake of these nutrients may protect and enhance liver health.
