A Published Study Warns Sleep Issues May Have Bone Health Effects

(Newswire.net — November 16, 2021) Orlando, FL — Sleep continues to intrigue the scientific community and is even a popular subject of research today. In some studies, it has been found to be linked with other aspects of health.

A study was carried out and published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research review.

In this study, the researchers are trying to see the link between sleep and bone health issues to understand the biological processes potentially connecting them.

According to researchers, the daily rhythm of bone turnover is likely essential for normal bone health. Recent research suggests that sleep apnea may be behind some cases of osteoporosis, but is left unrecognized.

It is worth noting that the effects of this condition on sleep duration and quality, inflammation, and oxygen levels, as well as other aspects of health, may have a variety of impacts on the metabolism of the bones.

Senior author Dr. Eric Orwoll says there are strong indications that daily rhythms are an intrinsic and important element of bone biology.

“If sleep disorders like obstructive sleep apnea affect bone metabolism, they may have diagnostic and therapeutic implications for many patients, including those affected by sleep apnea in their early, bone modeling years,” added lead author Dr. Christine Swanson.

The results of the largest study of sleep and BMD to date among U.S. postmenopausal women have shown that getting five or fewer hours of sleep a night is associated with low bone mineral density (BMD) and increased odds of osteoporosis.

According to study lead author Heather Ochs-Balcom, their study suggests that sleep may negatively impact bone health, adding to the list of the negative health impacts of poor sleep.

Ochs-Balcom is an associate professor of epidemiology and environmental health in the School of Public Health and Health Professions.

“I hope that it can also serve as a reminder to strive for the recommended seven or more hours of sleep per night for our physical and mental health,” she added.

This study focused on 11,084 postmenopausal women from the Women’s Health Initiative. It has been found that the subjects who self-reported sleeping five hours or less every night had significantly reduced bone mineral density at four sites — whole body, hip, neck, and spine — compared to women who slept seven hours a night.

More studies are still being carried out to look into the link between sleep and bone health. However, it remains true that experts are increasingly recommending some measures to help people enhance their sleep and bone health protection.
