Diet Now Found to Impact UTI Susceptibility, Experts Say

(Newswire.net — November 22, 2021) Orlando, FL — Researchers have long been revealing the factors found to contribute to the development of urinary tract infections (UTIs).

In a study, it has been found that a person’s diet and urine acidity may impact UTI susceptibility. More particularly, the presence of small molecules related to diet and urine acidity may have an influence on how well bacteria can grow in the urinary tract.

This research carried out by the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis was published in The Journal of Biological Chemistry.

Experts have time and again revealed that UTIs are caused by a  strain of bacteria called Escherichia coli (E. coli). Healthcare professionals have long been prescribing antibiotics to kill microbes.

Unfortunately, there is increasing bacterial resistance to these medications, driving scientists to look for alternative treatment strategies.

“Many physicians can tell you that they see patients who are particularly susceptible to urinary tract infections,” said senior author Jeffrey P. Henderson, MD, PhD., assistant professor of medicine.

“We often don’t know why certain people seem to be prone to recurrent UTIs. For a long time, we had inexpensive antibiotics that worked really well for this. But over the last 10-15 years, we have seen a huge jump in bacterial infections that are resistant to many of these drugs.”

Henderson and his team, including first author Robin R. Shields-Cutler, a graduate student in Henderson’s lab, looked into how the body fights bacterial infections naturally. They cultured E.coli in urine samples from healthy volunteers, and then noted major differences in how effectively individual urine samples could harness a key immune protein to limit bacterial growth.

“Age and sex did not turn out to be major players,” Shields-Cutler said.

“Of all the factors we measured, the only one that was really different between the two groups was pH — how acidic or basic the urine was.”

Years of research have shown that there are undeniably many factors that influence the prevention of UTI development. It is important to note that there are beverages like cranberry juice also widely used against infection.

Scientists have been looking into the remarkable healing effects of cranberry against UTIs. One of its powerful components is D-mannose, which is a therapeutic sugar that binds with the UTI-causing bacteria before they cause the infection.

There are helpful supplements like Divine Bounty D-mannose strongly recommended today. This powerful formula has long been resorted to by individuals who suffer from recurrent UTIs. (https://www.amazon.com/D-Mannose-600mg-Cranberry-Dandelion-Extract/dp/B01LX5KGF0)
