Scientists Reveal Flavonoids Delay Lung Function Decline

(Newswire.net — December 6, 2021) Winnetka, IL — Health experts have long been recommending some steps that could be helpful for protecting lung health. These include intake of certain foods that contain flavonoids, which are linked with disease-fighting benefits.

A study was carried out and spearheaded by Vanessa Garcia-Larsen, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Human Nutrition Division of the Department of International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland.

In this research, it has been found that intake of flavonoids may delay the decline in lung function caused by aging.

In previous research, it has been shown that these plant-produced chemicals contain beneficial antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

This study investigated the type of flavonoid called anthocyanins, which have been detected in lung tissue shortly after being ingested as well as in animals models of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Researchers reveal that plant chemicals lessen mucus and inflammatory secretions.

However, “the epidemiological evidence on the association between flavonoids and lung function is very scant,” said Garcia-Larsen.

“So we wanted to investigate whether dietary intake and anthocyanins are associated with lung function decline in middle-aged adults,” she added.

In this research, the investigators looked into data from 463 adults (average age: 44) who participated in the second and third European Community Respiratory Health Surveys from 2002 to 2012.

The participants completed a dietary questionnaire and underwent spirometry at enrollment and upon follow-up.

The researchers looked into the link between the intake of anthocyanins and lung function in smokers, those who had never smoked, and those who quit. It is further found that such an association seemed to be stronger among both never smokers and those who had quit than in the general study population.

The findings also show that among smokers, there was no link between anthocyanin intake and lung function.

More studies are still being carried out to look into the various aspects of lung health. It is vital to take some measures proven helpful in protecting the lungs.

Some natural remedies like the use of a medicinal herb called ashwagandha may be helpful. There are some studies revealing that this remedy may be useful for the protection and health of the lungs.

It may be obtained through the use of certain formulas like NutraHerbals Ashwagandha.

Through the use of this supplement, consumers would benefit from this herb’s adaptogenic, antidepressant, anxiolytic, antimicrobial, hypocholesterolemic, cardioprotective, antioxidant, neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and anti-angiogenic agents, as well as tannins, potassium, nitrate, fatty acids, and glucose.
