Scientists Suggest Fatty Foods Can Be Harmful to the Sperm

A study was published online on March 14 in the journal Human Reproduction.

In this research, the investigators had 99 American men divided into three groups according to their overall fat consumption.

It has been found that those with high-fat meals tended to have reduced sperm levels. It is worth noting that in this research, subjects with the highest daily fat intake had a 43 percent lower total sperm count.

Further, 38 percent lower sperm concentration appeared than in those with the lowest fat intake.

According to Dr. Joseph Alukal, although this study is limited by the number of patients evaluated, I do think it tells us something important in that it reminds us that male fertility is delicate and can be easily influenced by the same things that influence our general health.

Dr. Alukal is director of male reproductive health at NYU Langone Medical Center and assistant professor at the NYU School of Medicine, New York City.

The investigators suggest that saturated fats seemed to be the major factor associated with semen quality. 

Experts have been strongly recommending resorting to some helpful measures in protecting the sperm. In addition to reducing intake of fatty foods, which are also linked with diseases, it may also be helpful to increase intake of certain nutrients.
