Research Found Exercise Promotes Better Sleep

(Newswire.net — December 10, 2021) Orlando, FL — Sleep has long been a huge controversy and this is due to the fact that the lack of it is linked with the increased risk of diseases. There are factors found to contribute to better sleep, and one is exercise.

This is according to a study spearheaded by researchers from Penn State.

In this study, it has been found that engaging in exercise for a day may be adequate to impact sleep later that night. This pertains to exercise that’s more than normal or being more sedentary than usual.

This one-week micro-longitudinal study has shown that when teenagers had more physical activity than usual, they were able to sleep earlier and longer. Further, they also achieved better sleep that night.

Specifically, the investigating team has found that for every extra hour of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, the teens slept 10 minutes longer and fell asleep 18 minutes earlier.

It has further been shown that they had around one percent better sleep maintenance efficiency that night.

The researchers also revealed that being more sedentary during the day was linked with worse sleep health. In being sedentary even for more minutes during the day, the participants fell asleep and woke up later.

However, they also slept for a shorter amount of time overall.

According to Lindsay Master, adolescence is a critical period to obtain adequate sleep, as sleep can affect cognitive and classroom performance, stress, and eating behaviors.

Lindsay Master is a data scientist at Penn State.

“Our research suggests that encouraging adolescents to spend more time exercising during the day may help their sleep health later that night,” she added.

The findings of this research were published in Scientific Reports.

Orfeu Buxton, professor of biobehavioral health at Penn State, said the findings help illuminate the complex relationship between physical activity and sleep.

“You can think of these relationships between physical activity and sleep almost like a teeter-totter,” Buxton said.

“When you’re getting more steps, essentially, your sleep begins earlier, expands in duration, and is more efficient. Whereas if you’re spending more time sedentary, it’s like sitting on your sleep health: sleep length and quality goes down,” he added.

While exercise undeniably has many health benefits, it is also worth noting that it can be difficult to maintain it. The good news is that some remedies like L-Carnitine may be potentially helpful in boosting exercise performance.

It enhances energy levels and may even boost the body’s ability to burn fat. It is obtained widely nowadays through the use of formulas like Divine Bounty L-Carnitine. (amazon.com/dp/B06XF7K9MM).
