(Newswire.net — January 14, 2022) Orlando, FL — Over the years, studies have been highlighting the relevance of consuming healthy foods regularly to ward off chronic ailments like heart disease.

An observational study was carried out and it involved almost 20,000 people. It has been found that there is a link between the greater intake of red and processed meat with worse heart function.

The findings of this study were presented at ESC Preventive Cardiology 2021, an online scientific congress of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC).

“Previous studies have shown links between greater red meat consumption and increased risk of heart attacks or death from heart disease,” said study author Dr. Zahra Raisi-Estabragh of Queen Mary University of London, UK.

“For the first time, we examined the relationships between meat consumption and imaging measures of heart health. This may help us to understand the mechanisms underlying the previously observed connections with cardiovascular disease.”

This research particularly included 19,408 participants of the UK Biobank. The investigators looked into the links between the self-reported intake of red and processed meat with heart anatomy and function.

They analyzed three types of heart measures, and one is the cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) assessments of heart function utilized in clinical practice. These include the volume of the ventricles and measures of the pumping function of the ventricles.

For the second, the novel CMR radionics was used to extract detailed information from heart images like shape and texture as this indicates the health of the heart muscle. The third was the elasticity of the blood vessels.

They found that greater consumption of red and processed meat was linked with worse imaging measures of heart health, across all measures studied.

More particularly, those with a higher intake of meat actually had smaller ventricles, stiffer arteries, poorer heart function. It is worth keeping in mind these are markers of worse cardiovascular health.

Scientists continue to highlight the relevance of proper nutrition for cardiovascular health. It is worth keeping in mind that some nutrients may be helpful and these include B vitamins.

B vitamins have long been studied due to their strong medicinal benefits. Studies suggest they could work wonders in battling heart health ailments and promote overall cardiovascular health.
