A bug out bag can go by various names, and we may be familiar with them as an escape bag, an evacuation kit, a go bag, or other versions.
A bug out bag is an emergency package that can be used if you need to escape your home quickly and don’t have time to pack. You can simply take it with you.
Consider a flood, earthquake, fire, or other situation in your city that requires you to bug out swiftly; you may even need to use it to camp out in your home if you require emergency supplies.
Common tips and mistakes
There are many misconceptions about what you should take or do in an emergency situation. Most of the time people want to take all of their belongings and sentimental possessions, which only slows you down.
Survival is about just that, surviving!
You don’t need to bring a lot of extra stuff; it’ll just increase the weight and hold you back / make you tired when you have to get out swiftly. It’s all about surviving! This basically comes down to being hydrated, fed, warm, unhurt, and dry. When you’re in this circumstance, anything else might be considered a plus.
You can plan as much as humanly possible, but things do not always turn out to plan. You may have to turn to plan B or C to stay alive. This means the essentials are food, water and safe shelter with heat.
What should you include in your bag?
There are many things that you should include. But, they differ as there is no one size fits all.
Here are the most common things that we see in peoples kit
-
First aid kits
-
Spare food
-
Medical supplies
-
Copies of important documents
-
Fire starting tools
-
Multi tool
-
Sleeping bags
-

Remember that everyone has different requirements. If you need medication to stay safe and well, pack extra in case you can’t get back home or to a doctors in time. You can never predict the minimum or maximum time you will be outdoors or in a survival situation.
Other considerations
There are many considerations to think about when you are in a survival situation. We have narrowed these down to our top 3 priorities. – Water: When outdoors you will need to consider how much water you have in your reserve. And equally how many people are in your group. If you have a lot of people to keep hydrated, your reserve may be gone in a day. You will need to plan your route and consider where you can get fresh drinking water from. This also includes the question: how will you know it’s safe? The simple answer to this question is to always make sure you have some sort of water purification system and tablets to hand. – Shelter: When planning your route, you may also need to consider your shelter. It is important to find somewhere that has a nearby water source, is sheltered from the elements and if you can get phone signal, this is also a bonus! Be aware that wild animals do also roam around secluded areas, so if you are preparing food, do so with some distance away from where you plan to rest. Fire: This is also an essential as you will need to stay warm and cook food. Be sure to pack a lighter and also a back up method of creating fire such as matches or a flint. This is important to boost morale and if you happen to get wet or damp you will need to dry off otherwise you may risk hypothermia.
