Increasing Studies Warn Antibiotics May Wreak Havoc on Immune Health

(Newswire.net — February 2, 2022) Orlando, FL — Medications like antibiotics are often perceived to be life-saving and this is actually true. However, it is also important to note that they may produce some undesirable health consequences.

According to research studies, antibiotics may be detrimental to the body’s defenses. More and more strains of bacteria are actually becoming more resistant to antibiotics. This, experts fear, may lead us back to the dark ages of medicine where pharmaceutical drugs are ineffective against even the most common infections.

Scientists from MIT, Harvard, the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering, and the Broad Institute. carried out a study and found that antibiotics do work in weakening the ability of the immune system to fight off bugs.

According to Jason Yang, co-first author of the study, antibiotics interact with cells, particularly immune cells, in ways we didn’t expect.

“And the biochemical context, altered by antibiotics and cells in the surrounding tissue, matters when you’re trying to predict how a drug might work in different people or in different infections,” he adds.

In this research, the investigators infected mice with E.coli bacteria and then used an antibiotic treatment. They found that the use of the medication directly impacted the tissues of the mice, and this in turn altered the metabolites of those cells. These were cells released during the metabolism process.

Experts say these changes were counterproductive as metabolites are working to make E. coli more resistant to the antibiotic. Further, such a pharmaceutical drug has been found to reduce the efficacy of the immune cells called macrophages in battling infections.

The findings of this interesting study were published in the Cell Host & Microbe journal.

It is worth noting that the increased usage of antibiotics has long been something experts warn against.  In these challenging times of a pandemic, it is particularly important to ensure the immune system is protected and maintained strong.

It is wise to reduce the need for antibiotics, which are widely used in the treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs).

There are many ways to do this, and one is to use a therapeutic remedy called D-mannose. This is a type of sugar being widely researched by scientists due to its strong UTI-fighting benefits.

According to experts, D-mannose works in sticking with the E.coli bacteria found to be responsible for about 90 percent of all UTIs. Further, it works naturally so it doesn’t produce the side effects caused by antibiotic use(amazon.com/Mannose-Capsules-600mg-Per-Cap/dp/B071J35CP5).
