Experts Warn Some Skin Products Have High Levels of Mercury

The FDA prohibits mercury in drugs or in cosmetics, except when there are no other safe and effective preservatives available. 

Health authorities have long maintained that mercury exposure can have severe health consequences. The danger affects not just those who use mercury-containing products but also their families. 

“Your family might breathe mercury vapors released from these products. Your children might touch washcloths or towels that are contaminated with mercury. It could be as simple as touching someone’s cheek or face,” says Arthur Simone, M.D., a senior medical advisor at FDA.

It is important to remember that certain groups, such as nursing babies, pregnant women, and young children are found particularly vulnerable to mercury toxicity. Some signs of mercury poisoning are tremors, irritability, memory issues, and depression.
