A New Study Warns Dietary Carbs May Trigger the Onset of Osteoarthritis

(Newswire.net — February 15, 2022) Orlando, FL — Osteoarthritis is a painful condition that affects over 30 million Americans. It is important to be wary about its contributing factors as it is a way to reduce the odds of having the condition.

A study was spearheaded by scientist Tim Griffin, Ph.D from the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation.

In this research, the investigators found the link between the carbohydrate composition of diets and the odds of osteoarthritis.

This laboratory mouse study has also revealed that the results have remained the same even when the animals didn’t differ in weight.

According to Griffin,  they know increased body fat elevates risk, but they haven’t appreciated as much how diet itself affects the disease risk.

“These findings give us new clues that there can be significant dietary effects linked to increased OA risk even in the absence of obesity,” he adds.

Experts have time and again said that this debilitating condition usually develops when the cartilage cushioning bones in the joints break down and wear away. When this happens, it leads the bones to rub against each other producing symptoms like pain.

It is worth keeping in mind that some factors are found to include the risk, such as previous joint injuries, high-impact physical jobs, age, and genetics. However, it is also important to keep in mind that being overweight is among the most proven contributors.

“Obesity is one of the most significant factors for developing the disease in the knee joint,” says Griffin.

“However, therapeutic strategies to prevent or treat obesity-associated OA are limited because of the uncertainly about the root cause of the disease,” he explains further.

In this study, the investigators looked into exactly how obesity contributes to arthritis by subjecting the subject mice to different high-fat diets. Over time, they noticed that the carbohydrate makeup of the rodents’ low-fat control diet was alone adequate to change their chances of developing OA.

The researchers found sugar and fiber as the main culprits.

Today, an increasing number of studies are looking into ways to help combat osteoarthritis. This condition has left many in disability and jobless. Experts have been strongly stressing the relevance of taking some measures to ward off this disease.

There are plant-based remedies like the use of glucosamine that may be helpful. Many individuals with osteoarthritis resort to the use of this cartilage-repairing remedy as to a safer alternative to pain relievers, which are linked with side effects.

It may actually be obtained through the use of certain formulas like Divine Bounty Glucosamine. (https://www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Supplement-2000mg-serving/dp/B0126ZF0B0)
