(Newswire.net — March 1, 2022) Orlando, FL — There are various factors found to contribute to eye health issues like glaucoma, and in a study, it has been found air pollution may be one.

A new UCL-led study in the United Kingdom was published in the Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science.

In this research, it has been found individuals belonging to neighborhoods with increased amounts of fine particulate matter pollution were at least 6 percent more prone to glaucoma than the ones in the least polluted areas.

According to Professor Paul Foster, they have found yet another reason why air pollution should be addressed as a public health priority, and that avoiding sources of air pollution could be worthwhile for eye health alongside other health concerns.

Professor Paul Foster is from the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Hospital.

It is worth mentioning that glaucoma is the top cause of irreversible blindness and affects over 60 million people worldwide.

This neurodegenerative disease called glaucoma usually develops from an accumulation of pressure from fluid in the eye. It is worth noting that this causes damage to the optic nerve that connects the eye to the brain.

It is worth realizing that a majority of glaucoma risk factors are out of control, such as genetics or older age.

More studies are still being carried out to learn about this condition and how the odds of its development can be reduced.

It is worth being warned that this condition leads to symptoms like blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, severe eye pain, reddening of the eye, and sudden onset of visual disturbance.

There are many research studies nowadays that look into the all-natural ways of battling glaucoma. It is worth mentioning that certain B vitamins like niacin have been found to be useful.

Scientists reveal that vitamin B3 or niacin works in helping with the conversion of food into energy, and can also serve as an antioxidant.

Studies have found that the use of niacin plays a role in glaucoma prevention. There are other studies, like the research involving Korean adults that found a link between the increased risk of the condition and reduced dietary niacin intake.

There are actually many research studies revealing that high doses of niacin supplements were effective in glaucoma prevention.

Researchers continue to investigate the effects of B vitamins like niacin for glaucoma prevention.
