(Newswire.net — March 10, 2022) Orlando, FL — Urinary tract infections (UTIs), which are quite prevalent today, are the major reasons why the need and use of antibiotics continue to soar. It is worth noting that while this type of medication has life-saving benefits, it also has some drawbacks.
A global study warns the antibiotics found in some of the rivers around the world to exceed the safe levels by up to 300 times.
It is worth noting that researchers looked for 14 commonly used antibiotics in rivers across 72 countries throughout six continents. They found antibiotics at 65 percent of the monitored sites.
The research reveals that what exceeded safe levels by the largest margin is called metronidazole, which is used in the treatment of bacterial infections including skin and mouth infections. Further, the most prevalent antibiotic was trimethoprim.
Trimethoprim was detected at 307 of the 711 sites tested. It is worth noting is primarily used to treat urinary tract infections.
“Until now, the majority of environmental monitoring work for antibiotics has been done in Europe, N. America, and China. Often on only a handful of antibiotics. We know very little about the scale of the problem globally,” said Dr. John Wilkinson.
Dr. Wilkinson is from the Department of Environment and Geography, who coordinated the monitoring work said no other study had been done on this scale.
“Our study helps fill this key knowledge gap with data being generated for countries that had never been monitored before.”
The results are undeniably quite eye-opening and alarming at the same time. This is due to the fact that the study demonstrates the widespread contamination of review systems worldwide with antibiotic compounds.
“Many scientists and policymakers now recognize the role of the natural environment in the antimicrobial resistance problem. Our data show that antibiotic contamination of rivers could be an important contributor.”
The increasing rates of urinary tract infections (UTIs) are undeniably one of the reasons why the use of antibiotics is widespread. It is important to note that misuse or overuse of this medication is quite common today, and is linked with a myriad of undesirable health issues.
All-natural remedies like D-mannose are widely used nowadays by individuals who struggle with UTIs. There is a number of UTI sufferers who resort to the use of this remedy as to a safer alternative to antibiotics.
