Research Highlights the Heart Health Benefits of the Mediterranean Diet

( — March 22, 2022) Orlando, FL — Over the years, researchers have been investigating the effects of eating patterns like the Mediterranean diet on overall health, including the heart. 

One randomized controlled study has shown that following a Mediterranean diet with lean beef may lessen heart disease risk factors. 

The findings have further revealed that a combination of small portions of lean beef helped in reducing the risk factors for heart disease development, such as LDL cholesterol.

“The study suggests that healthy diets can include a wide variety of foods, such as red meat, and still be heart-friendly,” said Jennifer Fleming.

Fleming is an assistant teaching professor of nutrition at Penn State.

“When you create a healthy diet built on fruits, vegetables, and other plant-based foods, it leaves room for moderate amounts of other foods like lean beef,” Fleming added. 

In previous research studies, scientists have warned against the association between intake of red meat like beef and the increased odds of cardiovascular disease. However, it has not been established yet whether such effects are caused by red meat or if there are other contributing factors involved. 

Experts have long revealed that beef contains essential nutrients, especially the lean cuts like the loin or round, or 93 percent lean ground beef.

“This study highlights the importance of including lean beef in a Mediterranean dietary pattern that can yield heart-healthy benefits,” said David J. Baer.

Baet is a research leader at the United States Department of Agriculture — Agricultural Research Service, and a study co-principal investigator.
