A Published Study Shows Link Between Osteoporosis and Hearing Loss

(Newswire.net — March 28, 2022) Orlando, FL — Bone health issues like osteoporosis are quite common today. The scientific community has been carrying out studies to look into the various aspects of this condition and its link with other health issues.

A study was carried out and published in the Journal of the American Geriatric Society.

In this research, it has been found that women with low bone density and osteoporosis are at a heightened odds of hearing loss. In the United States, hearing loss is the third most common chronic health issue.

In previous studies, it has been found there was a higher prevalence of osteoporosis among individuals with hearing loss. This condition occurs when bones become brittle and weak and when there is low bone density (LBD).

However, there is limited research looking into whether these conditions may influence the risk of hearing loss over time. It has also remained unknown whether hearing loss can be avoided by using medication to prevent fractures in those with reduced bone density.

This research carried out by scientists from Brigham and Women’s Hospital was carried out as a part of the Conservation of Hearing Study (CHEARS).

It looked into data from nearly 144,000 women who were followed for up to 34 years. It has been particularly found that the odds of subsequent moderate or worse hearing loss were up to 40 percent higher in those with osteoporosis or LBD.

Its findings were published in the Journal of the American Geriatric Society.

“Adult-onset hearing loss is typically irreversible; therefore, CHEARS focuses on identifying potentially modifiable risk factors that may contribute to hearing loss,” said study leader Sharon Curhan, MD, ScM.

Curhan is from the Channing Division of Network Medicine at the Brigham.

“We were inspired by a recent study that found that bisphosphonates may help prevent noise-induced hearing damage in mice. We wanted to investigate whether bisphosphonates alter the risk of hearing loss in adults, in addition to whether there is a longitudinal association between osteoporosis or LBD and risk of subsequent hearing loss.”

Multiple research studies have highlighted the various aspects of bone health. Experts have time and again said there are many ways to enhance bone health and protection, and these include proper nutrition.

B vitamins are some of the nutrients beneficial for bone health. These are Choline, Pantothenic acid, Biotin, Vitamin B12, Folic Acid, Niacin, Riboflavin, Thiamin, and vitamin B6.

They may be obtained through the use of formulas like Divine Bounty B Vitamin Complex, which is known for its high potency and purity (amazon.com/dp/B07414752B).
