Researchers from the New Edith Cowan University (ECU) carried out a study.
In this study, the investigators looked into data involving more than 50,000 people residing in Denmark taking part in the Danish Diet, Cancer, and Health Study over a 23-year period.
It was for the purpose of determining whether those who regularly consumed higher quantities of nitrate-rich vegetables, such as beetroot and leafy greens, had reduced blood pressure levels. It also aimed at examining whether the participants were less likely to have a heart disease diagnosis many years later.
It has been found that consumption of just one cup of nitrate-rich vegetables every day can significantly reduce their risk of heart disease.
It is worth noting that cardiovascular diseases are the number one cause of death on a global scale, taking around 17.9 million lives each year.
More particularly, it has been shown those who consumed the most nitrate-rich vegetables had about a 2.5 mmHg lower systolic blood pressure and between 12 to 26 percent reduced risk of heart disease.
According to lead researcher Dr. Catherine Bondonno from ECU’s Institute for Nutrition Research, identifying diets to prevent heart disease was a priority.
“Our results have shown that by simply eating one cup of raw (or half a cup of cooked) nitrate-rich vegetables each day, people may be able to significantly reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease,” Dr. Bondonno said.
It has further been found that the greatest reduction in risk was by 26 percent for peripheral artery disease. This is a type of heart disease characterized by the narrowing of blood vessels of the legs. It has further been found they had a lowered odds of heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure.
