Research Warns Link Between Dementia Risk and Nightly Five-Hour Sleep

The researchers performed the study to see the link between sleep disturbances and deficiencies among older adults and the risk of dementia and death. It has been particularly found that the odds of dementia doubled among subjects who reported getting less than five hours of sleep than those who reported 7-to 8 hours of sleep per night. 

The findings have also shown links between sleep deficiency and sleep disturbance with the overall risk of death. 

“Our findings illuminate a connection between sleep deficiency and risk of dementia and confirm the importance of efforts to help older individuals obtain sufficient sleep each night,” said lead author, Rebecca Robbins, Ph.D., of the Division of Sleep and Circadian Disorders.

The researchers involved collected data from older adults participating in the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS). It is worth noting that NHATS is a longitudinal study of Medicare beneficiaries 65 years and older.

Overall, routinely taking 30 minutes or longer to fall asleep was linked with a greater risk of dementia by 45 percent. 

There was also an association between the increased odds of death and reporting poor sleep quality and dementia – routinely experiencing difficulty in maintaining alertness, routinely napping, and sleeping five or fewer hours per night.
