A Study Warns Americans Are Increasingly Eating Ultra-Processed Foods

(Newswire.net — April 7, 2022) Orlando, FL — Multiple research studies in the past have warned against the intake of unhealthy foods, which are linked with a myriad of negative health outcomes.

A study has particularly shown that more and more Americans are consuming ultra-processed foods over the past two decades.

This 18-year research carried out by scientists at NYU School of Global Public Health measured the increase in foods, which are industrially manufactured, that may be contributing to the skyrocketing rates of obesity and other diseases. 

“The overall composition of the average U.S. diet has shifted towards a more processed diet. This is concerning, as eating more ultra-processed foods is associated with poor diet quality and higher risk of several chronic diseases,” said Filippa Juul.

Juul is an assistant professor and postdoctoral fellow at NYU School of Public Health and the study’s lead author. 

“The high and increasing consumption of ultra-processed foods in the 21st century may be a key driver of the obesity epidemic.”

The findings of this research were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

It is worth noting that ultra-processed foods are those that are ready to heat or eat. They are known for the additives they contain as well as for the fact that they are largely devoid of whole foods. 

In this study, Juul and her colleagues looked into the dietary data from almost 41,000 adults who took part in the CDC’s National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2001 through 2018. 

Intake of ultra-processed food increased from 53.5 percent of calories at the start of the study period to 57 percent at the end. 

It is important to note that there was an increase in the intake of ready-to-eat or heated meals like frozen dinners. Further, there was a decline in the consumption of some sugary foods and drinks.
