Research Warns Against Link In Between Long-Term Stress and Obesity

This study was carried out by UCL researchers who revealed that individuals with long-term stress may also be more prone to obesity.  

The findings of this research were published in the Obesity journal. 

In the study, the investigators examined hair samples for levels of cortisol, which is a hormone regulating the body’s response to stress. The findings have particularly shown that exposure to increased cortisol levels over several months is linked with people being more persistently, and heavily overweight. 

It is worth noting that chronic stress has long been theorized to be implicated in obesity. In times of stress, people have the propensity to report overeating and comfort eating foods loaded with sugar, calories, and fat. 

Experts also say that the stress hormone called cortisol plays a vital role in metabolism as well as determining where fat is stored. In previous studies, researchers measured the hormone in saliva, blood, or urine.

The study above involved 2,527 men and women aged 54 and older who took part in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, taking data over a four-year period. The researchers obtained a lock of hair 2cm long from every participant. 

It is worth noting that the hair was cut as close as possible to the scalp. It represented roughly a hair growth of two months with associated buildup levels of cortisol. They also looked at the body mass index, weight, and waist circumference of the participants as well as how hair cortisol was lined with the persistence of obesity over time.

“These results provide consistent evidence that chronic stress is associated with higher levels of obesity,” said Dr. Sarah Jackson (UCL Epidemiology and Public Health) who led the research.
