Healthy Lifestyle Habits May Help You Stay Disease-Free, Study Shows

A study highlights links between healthy lifestyle habits and the decreased risk of chronic disease.

The study has particularly revealed that these factors are associated with as much as 80 percent of a decrease in the odds of developing the most common and fatal chronic diseases.

The findings of this research were published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

Cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, which are chronic ailments that account for high mortality rates, are largely preventable. 

“An impressive body of research has implicated modifiable lifestyle factors such as smoking, physical activity, diet, and body weight in the causes of these diseases,” the authors write.

In this research, Earl S. Ford, M.D., M.P.H., of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, and colleagues evaluated data from 23,513 German adults aged 35 to 65. 

This European Prospective Investigation Into Cancer and Nutrition–Potsdam (EPIC-Potsdam) study was carried out between 1994 and 1998.

At the start of the research, the subjects were made to complete an assessment of their body weight and height, have a personal interview that included questions about diseases, and answer a questionnaire on sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics as well as a food frequency questionnaire.

Their responses were assessed according to their adherence to the four healthy lifestyle factors. 

“Our results reinforce current public health recommendations to avoid smoking, to maintain a healthy weight, to engage in physical activity appropriately and to eat adequate amounts of fruits and vegetables and foods containing whole grains and to partake of red meat prudently,” the authors write.
