Researchers Reveal Healthiness Rank of Food From First to Worst

(Newswire.net — May 12, 2022) Orlando, FL — Food is generally considered to be vital for human survival. However today, researchers are increasingly studying the impacts of making the right food choices on overall health. 

A scientific team at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts has created a new nutrient profiling system called Food Compass, which was developed over a three-year period.  

This most comprehensive and science-based tool incorporates cutting-edge science on how various food characteristics negatively or positively affect health. 

The findings can be found in Nature Food. 

The system features equally taking into account healthy versus harmful factors in food. It also involves incorporating cutting-edge science on food ingredients, nutrients, processing characteristics, phytochemicals, and additives.  

“Once you get beyond ‘eat your veggies, avoid soda,’ the public is pretty confused about how to identify healthier choices in the grocery store, cafeteria, and restaurant,” said the study’s lead and corresponding author, Dariush Mozaffarian, dean of the Friedman School. 

“Consumers, policymakers, and even industry are looking for simple tools to guide everyone toward healthier choices.”

In the making of this system, the researchers used a detailed national database of 8,032 foods and beverages consumed by Americans. 

The food compass is designed to encourage the food industry to produce healthier foods and reformulate the ingredients in widely-consumed processed foods and snacks. It also provides food purchasing incentives for employees via health care, worksite wellness, and nutrition assistance programs. 

It could even be helpful in guiding cafeterias in hospitals, businesses, and schools as well as restaurants in presenting healthier food options.

“With its publicly available scoring algorithm, Food Compass can provide a nuanced approach to promoting healthy food choices-helping guide consumer behavior, nutrition policy, scientific research, food industry practices, and socially based investment decisions,” said last author Renata Micha.

Micha did this work as a faculty member at the Friedman School and is now at the University of Thessaly.
