Extra Weekend Sleep Won’t Offset Sleep Debt, Experts Warn

(Newswire.net — May 16, 2022) Orlando, FL — Years of research has shown that adequate sleep is vital for disease protection and overall health maintenance.

A study has shown that the odds of having metabolic issues like obesity and diabetes may increase due to untreated sleep disorders and insufficient sleep.

The findings, which were published in Current Biology, have shown that even extra sleep taken on the weekends was not enough to reduce the risk.

“The key take-home message from this study is that ad libitum weekend recovery or catch-up sleep does not appear to be an effective countermeasure strategy to reverse sleep loss induced disruptions of metabolism,” says Kenneth Wright of the University of Colorado Boulder.

Christopher Depner and Wright spearheaded the study and enlisted healthy young adults. Each participant was randomly assigned to one of three groups.

The first group actually had plenty of sleep time, namely 9 hours, every night for 9 consecutive nights. The second group had 5 hours and the third slept for 5 hours followed by a longer sleep weekend.

It is worth noting that the restriction of sleep in the first group was associated with a decrease in insulin sensitivity of about 13 percent. Further, the investigators revealed that the group who slept more on the weekend still showed less insulin sensitivity.

Further, the findings have shown there was a reduction in insulin sensitivity of their whole bodies, liver, and muscle by 9 to 27 percent after inadequately sleeping again, and it was when the weekend was over.

There are actually many studies looking into the various aspects of sleep health. Some researchers also recommend nourishing the body with certain nutrients to enhance overall sleep quality and quantity.

Nutrients like B vitamins have been found to be significantly helpful for sleep. Some studies even suggest that intake of these vitamins worked in producing adequate sleep among individuals with insomnia.

Over the years, studies have shown the use of these nutrients is associated with disease-fighting benefits. This is why it is vital to maintain healthy levels of B vitamins, which can be obtained from healthy foods.

There are also extra-strength formulas like Divine Bounty B Vitamin Complex being widely used nowadays. This supplement is made carefully in an FDA-inspected facility in the U.S. and continues to be a popular choice in the global market.
