A New Study Warns BPA-Alternative Chemical Increases Blood Pressure

(Newswire.net — May 26, 2022) Orlando, FL — Today, experts increasingly warn against ingestion of ingredients like bisphenol A (BPA). This is due to the fact that it is linked with certain negative health outcomes.

A study was carried out and published in the special supplemental section of the Journal of the Endocrine Society.

The findings of this rodent study were presented at ENDO 2020, which is the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society. 

In this research, it has been found that substitutes for common bisphenol A have an effect on developing fetuses. What makes them similarly alarming is that they could also cause hypertension later in life. 

It is worth noting that BPA is used widely used in plastic synthesis. It is also found in a number of consumer products used by humans on a daily basis. 

There have been many research studies suggesting that BPA has the ability to disrupt the endocrine system of the body. This is due to its ability to mimic the hormone called estrogen. Further, scientists have previously found a link between BPA exposure and high blood pressure.

In 2012, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned the use of this chemical, particularly in baby bottles as well as infant formula packaging. 

It is worth noting that manufacturers often used chemicals like bisphenol S (BPS) and bisphenol F (BPF) as replacements for BPA. These are substitute chemicals that can be found in products often labeled as “BPA-free.”

Study co-author Maryam Hazim Al Mansi of the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine says that cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of mortality among men and women. 

“With the new blood pressure guidelines from the American Heart Association, almost half of the United States population — 45.6% — has hypertension,” she adds. 

In this new study, the investigators actually exposed pregnant rates to reduced levels of saline, BPS or BOF, and BPA. They then followed the development of their offspring. It is worth mentioning that researchers implanted devices to the offspring to measure blood pressure levels.
