A Study Warns About Link Between Increased Meat Intake and Asthma

One of these studies was carried out by Mount Sinai researchers and published in Thorax. 

In this research, the investigators highlight advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), which are pro-inflammatory compounds, as an example of early dietary risk factors. 

According to the researchers, this may have broad clinical and public health implications for inflammatory airway disease prevention. They particularly revealed that substances found in cooked meats are linked with symptoms of childhood asthma. 

It is worth noting that this study has shown that cooked meats contain substances, which are linked with increased wheezing in children. 

It involved examining 4,388 children between 2 and 17 years old from the 2003-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). 

It is important to note that the NHANES is a program of the National Center for Health Statistics, which is part of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 

The researchers used NHANES survey data in assessing links between dietary AGE and meat consumption frequencies, and respiratory symptoms. NHANES assesses the health and nutritional status of adults and children in the U.S. via interviews and physical examinations. 

They have particularly found a significant link in between higher AGE consumption and the increased odds of wheezing. This includes wheezing that disrupted sleep and exercise and needed prescription medication. 

Further, they revealed that increased intake of non-seafood meats was linked with wheeze-disrupted sleep and wheezing, which required treatment of prescription medication.

“We found that higher consumption of dietary AGEs, which are largely derived from intake of non-seafood meats, was associated with increased risk of wheezing in children, regardless of overall diet quality or an established diagnosis of asthma,” said Jing Gennie Wang, MD.

Wang is the lead author of the study, and a former fellow in Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
