New Drug Regimens May Enhance Kidney Transplant Outcomes

(Newswire.net — June 29, 2022) Orlando, FL — Pharmaceutical drugs are usually prescribed for individuals with kidney disease. Medications are not just widely used for the condition but are also studied by researchers.

Doctors have long been warning against chronic kidney disease, which affects about 37 million American adults. It is important to realize that in 2016, CKD was found to cause kidney failure in 726,331 Americans.

The staggering statistics of CKD continue to alarm more and more experts. It is worth realizing that 1 in 2 individuals with very low kidney function are actually unaware they have CKD.

Research has further shown roughly 1 in 3 adults with diabetes also have chronic kidney disease.

In the United States, there are about 100,000 individuals who are actually waiting for a kidney transplant. However, in 2018, only 21,167 people were able to receive one.

A clinical trial worth $5.2 million was carried out by the researchers from the University of Cincinnati.

The findings of this study suggest that a particular immunosuppressive drug aids in safely and effectively treating kidney transplant patients. The investigators further note that such positive results came without negative long-term side effects of traditional immunosuppressive regimens.

According to principal investigator E. Steve Woodle, they wanted to reduce the side effects and toxicities of these medications and make it easier for patients to tolerate their anti-rejection drugs while achieving rejection rates that are reasonable.

Woodle is William A. Altemeier Professor in Research Surgery at the UC College of Medicine and director of Solid Organ Transplantation for UC Health.

“This work solved a vexing 40-year-old problem and represents a major step forward in the field of transplantation,” he adds.

This interesting study is actually just one of the many looking into the potential cures of kidney disease.

Certain nutrients have been scientifically found to work wonders in delivering various kidney health benefits. Experts have long been stressing the relevance of nourishing the body with these nutrients to ward off kidney disease.

In individuals with CKD, their suggested diet may be limited and this hinders them from getting the vitamins and minerals they need.

Some of the recommended nutrients for the kidneys are vitamins B6, B12, and folic acid. It is also wise to increase the intake of pantothenic acid, thiamine, and riboflavin.

Aside from B vitamins, kidney dietitians also recommend intake of iron, vitamin C, vitamin D, and calcium.

These can all be obtained from consuming healthy foods, but there are also supplements available, like Divine Bounty Men’s Multivitamins.

It contains vitamin A, C, D, E, K, thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin B6, folate, vitamin B12, biotin, pantothenic acid, calcium, phosphorous, iodine, magnesium, zinc, selenium, copper, manganese, chromium, and molybdenum.
