Multiple Research Studies Warn Sleep Deprivation Wreaks Havoc on Heart Health

(Newswire.net — August 3, 2022) Orlando, FL — Multiple research studies have long been stressing the importance of sleep for overall health. Scientists even say that individuals who are sleep deprived are more susceptible to various diseases and disorders.

A study was published in the American Heart Association’s journal called Hypertension.

In this research, the investigators looked into the causal association between poor sleep habits and the heightened risk of heart disease.

While it is true that many previous studies have actually determined that lack of sleep can be detrimental to heart health, only a few have been able to determine the reason why.

Researchers who carried out the study tested a variety of sleep patterns involving 26 healthy young adults.

For a week, all participants were made to have a five-hour sleep restriction per day. Half of the subjects were also made to sleep during the day on four occasions instead of sleeping during the nighttime.

This is for the purpose of mimicking the sleep patterns of shift workers. During the study, the researchers closely monitored the blood pressure, heart rates, and a stress hormone called norepinephrine of the participants.

The study findings have shown that inadequate sleep increased daytime heart rate in all of the subjects. It is further worth mentioning that both groups experienced increases in the levels of norepinephrine.

This is another alarming finding considering that this stress hormone can constrict blood vessels and increase blood pressure.

Due to the findings, the investigators strongly highlight the significance of getting 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night to achieve better health. This can be extremely beneficial in warding off heart disease and other conditions.

It is worth realizing that there are various factors found to contribute to heart disease, and one is a deficiency in certain nutrients like magnesium. Experts say such a deficiency is a commonly overlooked risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

This has led some researchers to suggest that the lower intake of magnesium, the greater cardiovascular disease will be.

In some studies, it has been shown that supplementation of magnesium can be beneficial for a range of cardiac factors. These include arrhythmias, hypertension, atherosclerosis, and endothelial dysfunction.

It is important to be warned that even a moderate deficiency in magnesium can lead to profound changes in how the blood cells, blood vessels, intestinal tract, and heart function.
