Research Warns a Southern Diet Increases Risk of Sudden Cardiac Death

(Newswire.net — August 3, 2022) Orlando, FL — Scientists have been investigating the impacts of food on disease prevention or development and longevity. Some studies have linked certain eating patterns with the increased odds of diseases.

A study was carried out and published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, which is an open-access journal of the American Heart Association.

In this research, regular consumption of a Southern-style diet may increase the odds of sudden cardiac death. Such an eating pattern comes in abundance with fried foods and sugary drinks. Further, the findings have shown that a Mediterranean diet may lessen the risk.

The Mediterranean diet is one loaded with vegetables, fish, fruits, whole grains, and legumes as well as low in meat and dairy. The Southern diet, on the other hand, is loaded with eggs, added fats, processed meats like bacon and hotdogs, organ meats, and sugar-sweetened beverages.

“While this study was observational in nature, the results suggest that diet may be a modifiable risk factor for sudden cardiac death, and, therefore, diet is a risk factor that we have some control over,” said James M. Shikany, Dr.P.H., F.A.H.A.,

Shikany is the study’s lead author and professor of medicine and associate director for research in the Division of Preventive Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

“Improving one’s diet — by eating a diet abundant in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fish such as the Mediterranean diet and low in fried foods, organ meats and processed meats, characteristics of the Southern-style dietary pattern, may decrease one’s risk for sudden cardiac death,” he said.

This research looked into over 21,000 individuals ages 45 and above who were enrolled in an ongoing national research project called Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS).

It is worth noting the REGARDS examines the geographic and racial differences in stroke. Participants were recruited between 2003 and 2007. It is worth noting that 56 percent of the subjects were women, 33 percent were Black adults, and 56 percent lived in the southeastern U.S.

More studies are still being carried out to look into the different influential factors to cardiovascular health. Diet is undeniably important as food has a huge role to play in the prevention or development of certain diseases.

Experts have been increasingly recommending consuming healthy foods, which are loaded with nutrients. There are nutrients like B vitamins found to be helpful in delivering heart health benefits.

These nutrients may be obtained through the use of extra-strength formulas like Divine Bounty B Vitamin Complex, which contains Choline, Pantothenic acid, Biotin, Vitamin B12, Folic Acid, Niacin, Riboflavin, Thiamin, and vitamin B6 (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B07414752B).
