(Newswire.net — August 10, 2022) Orlando, FL — Processed meat has long been a subject of research due to the fact that it is widely consumed and its intake is associated with certain negative health outcomes.
A study carried out by researchers from the University of Leeds’ Nutritional Epidemiology Group has shown that consumption of processed meat may increase dementia risk.
They looked into data from 500,000 people and found that consuming a 25g serving of processed meat a day, the equivalent to one rasher of bacon, is correlated with a 44 percent increased risk of developing the disease.
However, they also revealed that eating some unprocessed red meat like pork or veal and unprocessed red meat could be highly protective. This is due to the fact that those who consumed 50g a day only had a 19% less likelihood of developing dementia.
It is worth noting that dementia affects around 5 percent to 8 percent of individuals over the age of 6 years around the globe.
Their results, titled Meat consumption and risk of incident dementia: a cohort study of 493,888 UK Biobank participants.
Its findings were published today in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
“Worldwide, the prevalence of dementia is increasing and diet as a modifiable factor could play a role,” Lead researcher Huifeng Zhang, a Ph.D. student from Leeds’ School of Food Science and Nutrition, said.
“Our research adds to the growing body of evidence linking processed meat consumption to increased risk of a range of non-transmissible diseases.”
In this study, which was supervised by Professors Janet Cade and Laura Hardie, both at Leeds, the researchers looked into data provided by the UK Biobank, a database containing in-depth genetic and health information from half a million UK participants aged 40 to 69.
Professor Cade said: “Anything we can do to explore potential risk factors for dementia may help us to reduce rates of this debilitating condition. This analysis is a first step towards understanding whether what we eat could influence that risk.”
