St. Louis, Mo., Aug. 4, 2022- Senior Care Authority®, an eldercare consulting and senior living residential placement service, locally owned by Erin Dwyer-Busch, announced the launch of Beyond Driving with Dignity in the greater St. Louis area. Beyond Driving with Dignity is a nationally recognized program that provides practical, real-life solutions to older drivers and their concerned families. The “Beyond Driving with Dignity” program is designed to save lives while simultaneously helping to ease the burden of the family as they find themselves faced with this very challenging issue.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 20 older adults (65+) are killed and almost 700 are injured in traffic crashes every day. Adults are currently outliving their ability to drive safely by 7-10 years. The Beyond Driving with Dignity training and certification program was designed to help senior drivers and their families work through the complicated issue of age-related diminishing driving skills.
Beyond Driving with Dignity helps an older driver make a smooth transition from the driver’s seat to the passenger seat. The program also ensures that the individual can maintain as much independence as possible. Senior Care Authority’s Erin Dwyer-Busch wants to ensure that her clients and families receive guidance through the difficult decision of when a senior should cease driving. “As a licensed speech-language pathologist and Certified Senior Advisor, I realized so many benefits of the Beyond Driving with Dignity program and how many pain points it addressed for families-especially when it comes to cognitive decline and how to bring up the issue of driving,” remarked Dwyer-Busch.
“Most family members dread discussing the driving issue with their aging loved ones and are thrilled to pass the buck to a professional who can coach them on what to say and deliver the data-driven results respectfully, yet honestly, directly to the client in the privacy and comfort of their own home. This program removes most of the excuses that seniors present to their adult children or spouses regarding relinquishing the keys and provides the client with a detailed summary report and an action plan on when and how to retire from driving. It provides peace of mind to both the client and their family knowing they are not alone tackling this delicate subject matter.”
The founder of Beyond Driving with Dignity, Matt Gurwell, saw firsthand the need for a program of this kind while serving as an Ohio state trooper. He created the program to help families navigate what can be a difficult and emotional conversation, and ultimately to reduce the number of unnecessary and avoidable death notices state troopers have to deliver.
“Not all seniors need to stop driving, but many families aren’t sure when or how to make that decision for their loved ones,” said Gurwell, “Our program allows families to remove the emotional aspect from the conversation and make a decision together, based on the facts. We want a mutually-made decision with the senior.”
