(Newswire.net — August 17, 2022) Orlando, FL — Decades of research have highlighted the various factors found to be influential to weight. Health authorities have time and again warned that obesity is increasingly becoming an epidemic in many areas around the globe.
A study has shown that a common pesticide may actually contribute to the global obesity crisis. More particularly, the investigators found that a commonly-used pesticide called chlorpyrifos delayed the burning of calories in the brown adipose tissue of mice.
The findings of this study can be found in Nature Communications.
This research was carried out by McMaster University scientists. It is worth noting that this pesticide is banned for use in Canada nonetheless it is being spayed on fruits and vegetables in many areas around the globe.
The process called diet-induced thermogenesis pertains to the decrease in the burning of calories. It triggers the body to store extra calories, and this eventually leads to weight gain or obesity.
The investigators in this research looked into 34 commonly used pesticides and herbicides in brown fat cells. They also tested the impacts of chlorpyrifos in mice fed high-calorie diets.
“Brown fat is the metabolic furnace in our body, burning calories, unlike normal fat that is used to store them. This generates heat and prevents calories from being deposited on our bodies as normal white fat. We know brown fat is activated during cold and when we eat,” said senior author Gregory Steinberg.
Steinberg is a professor of medicine and co-director of the Centre for Metabolism, Obesity, and Diabetes Research at McMaster.
“Lifestyle changes around diet and exercise rarely lead to sustained weight loss. We think part of the problem may be this intrinsic dialing back of the metabolic furnace by chlorpyrifos.”
The researcher further said that chlorpyrifos would only need to inhibit the use of energy in brown fat by 40 calories on a daily basis to trigger obesity in adults. It is worth noting this would translate to an extra five pounds of weight gain per year.
Experts continue to carry out studies to investigate the factors influencing obesity. Pesticides are just some of the toxins that are being studied by researchers today.
