Study Warns Even Minor Stress Carries Long-term Health Risks

A study has shown that even small, daily stress factors can lead to health problems later in life.

It was carried out by Kate Leger — from the University of California, Irvine — and colleagues.

This research was supported by the National Institute on Aging and the National Institutes of Health, suggests that even small daily stress factors can lead to health problems later in life.

Experts say that individuals who allow even small stress factors to produce lingering negative emotions can take a toll on long-term health. 

In multiple research studies, investigators have long revealed that stress is a risk factor for a number of health issues like anxiety, depression, and cardiovascular diseases.

The study findings were published in journal Psychological Science, of the Association for Psychological Science.

The investigators looked into data from the Midlife in the United States National Longitudinal Study of Health and Well-being. At the start of the research, the subjects were asked to fill in an 8-day survey recording their daily emotional states.

Throughout this period, they had to record “how much of the time over the past 24 hours” they had experienced certain emotions on a daily basis. These negative emotions were nervousness, worthlessness, hopelessness, loneliness, fear, jitteriness, irritability, shame, upset, anger, frustration, restlessness, or feeling “that everything was an effort.”

It is further worth mentioning that the subjects were required to reveal what daily stressors triggered the emotions they experienced.

The study findings have particularly shown that subjects who were unable to let go of negative emotions due to daily stressors tended to suffer from more health issues. These issues includes chronic illness and functional limitations.
