Research Warns Antibiotic Resistance Occurs Naturally in Soil Bacteria

(Newswire.net — August 25, 2022) Orlando, FL — Researchers have been carrying out studies to look into the prevalence and impacts of antibiotic resistance. It is worth noting that experts have long been classifying it as a growing public health concern. 

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientists reveal that antibiotic resistance occurs naturally in soil bacteria. 

More specifically, they found antibiotic-resistant bacteria in prairie soils that had little or absolutely without exposure to human or animal activity. It is worth noting that antibiotics have been effectively treating bacterial diseases for decades.

However, some bacteria have turned resistant to the antibiotics that once killed them.

In this study, the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) researchers investigated agriculture-related antibiotic resistance and developed solutions to address food safety, animal production and protection, and the environment.

It is worth noting that part of their efforts involved assessing antibiotic resistance in soils. 

It was microbiologist Lisa Durso and her colleagues at the ARS Agroecosystem Management Research Unit in Lincoln, Nebraska, who recently demonstrated that ungrazed prairie soils contain measurable amounts of antibiotic resistant bacteria.

“A tool for measuring resistance is needed to identify the source of antibiotic resistance on farms and in the environment,” said Durso. 

It is important to establish baseline levels of antibiotic resistance as it will allow researchers to differentiate resistance triggered by human antibiotic use from resistance that occurs naturally.

It is further worth noting that in this study, the investigators found that all prairies contained bacteria that were resistant to tetracycline and cefotaxime. These are two commonly prescribed antibiotics used in the treatment of a wide variety of infections.
