A Study Shows Probiotics Offer Bone Health Protection to Older Women

(Newswire.net — September 21, 2022) Orlando, FL — Today, more and more people are resorting to measures in enhancing bone health. Some studies also show that intake of probiotics may be significantly helpful.

Researchers from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden carried out a study.

This study is the first to demonstrate that the use of probiotics, dietary supplements with health-promoting bacteria, may have impacts on the human skeleton.

It was conducted at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Mölndal, Sweden.

The findings of this research were published by the Journal of Internal Medicine.

It involved ninety elderly women, 76 years old on average, who ingested a powder containing either health-promoting bacteria or a placebo every day for a whole year.

The researchers used a random method that determined which women received the active treatment with the Lactobacillus reuteri 6475 bacteria and which ones got powder without bacteria. It is worth noting that no one, neither the scientists nor the women, was aware of who received the active powder during the study.

According to Anna Nilsson,  the women who received the powder with active bacteria had lost only half as much bone in the skeleton compared with those who received inactive powders.

Anna Nilsson is a chief physician and associate professor at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg.

“Another positive outcome from the study was that the treatment was well tolerated and did not produce more side effects than those experienced by women who received the placebo,” she added.

It has been particularly found that among older women who received probiotics, there was a reduction in bone loss by half compared to women who received only a placebo. It is important to keep in mind osteoporosis, which pertains to bone brittleness, is characterized by weak and porous bones. This leads in breakage even when subjected to low loads, such as a fall from standing height.

“Today there are effective medications administered to treat osteoporosis, but because bone fragility is rarely detected before the first fracture, there is a pressing need for preventive treatments,” says Mattias Lorentzon.

Lorentzon is a chief physician and professor of geriatrics at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg.
