Research Warns Against Antibiotic Resistance in Urban Beaches

 In an effort to look into the prevalence of antibiotic resistance in urban coastal environments, the researchers found that some beaches around Sydney have heightened levels of antibiotic-resistant (ABR) bacteria following rainfall. 

According to the investigators, the research highlights the exchange of antibiotic-resistant microbes between human waste-water streams and natural ecosystems and a mechanism for potentially significant AbR exposure risk to humans.

The findings of this interesting research shed light on the links between storm-water discharge and the occurrence of AbR in microorganisms found in urban beach habitats. 

It is worth noting that stormwater discharge sometimes includes wet-weather sewer overflow (WWSO) events.

The study suggests that stormwater, sewage, and urban waste-stream infrastructure like pipes, are potential reservoirs and channels for the widespread contamination of AbR into natural coastal waters.

“The study is unique in the way that it combined an intense sampling regime with molecular biological approaches to track patterns in AbR genes at two contrasting study sites — Foreshore Beach within Botany Bay and Maroubra Beach, in southern Sydney,” said first author, Dr. Ric Carney.

Dr. Carney conducted the research as part of his Ph.D. in the Climate Change Cluster at UTS.
