Study Now Reveals How To Effectively Combat Antibiotic Resistance

( — October 10, 2022) Orlando, FL — Antibiotic resistance has long been considered to be one of the biggest threats to global health. The scientific community is even increasingly studying some measures helpful for fighting the issue.

A study suggests that there are actually innovative ways to target antibiotic resistance in the short term.

The findings of this research were published in Essays in Biochemistry.

“If bacteria continue developing resistance to multiple antibiotics at the present rate, at the same time as the antibiotic pipeline continues to dry up, there could be catastrophic costs to healthcare and society globally,” said senior co-author of one of the articles, Dr. Tony Velkov.

Dr. Velkoy is an Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Career Development Fellow from Monash University, Victoria, Australia.

Any antimicrobial resistance issue is concerning. However, the rising incidence of antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative bacteria has become a particular issue as strains resistant to multiple antibiotics are becoming increasingly common.

This is exacerbated by the absence of new drugs to treat these infections (eg, carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae).

It is worth noting that these Gram-negative bacteria are deemed as the most critical priority in the list of the 12 families of bacteria, which pose the greatest threat to human health.

The list was just recently released by the World Health Organization.

Another paper pointing to the same issue has highlighted the reasons behind the high levels of antimicrobial resistance found in these critical Gram-negative organisms.

It is worth noting that it was written by the Guest Editor of the journal, Dr. Rietie Venter, University of South Australia, Adelaide, and colleagues.

“One of the main contributing factors to the increased resistance observed in Gram-negative bacteria is the permeability barrier caused by their additional outer membrane,” said the authors.

While antibiotic resistance is a growing global health issue, it is important to note that there are ways to reduce its prevalence. Lessening the rates of UTIs is one of the techniques, and this is due to the fact that this type of infection is normally treated with antibiotics.

Due to the increasing rates of UTIs, it has become increasingly common for antibiotics to be misused or overused.

The good news is that there are certain remedies like the use of Divine Bounty D-mannose that could be helpful in fighting UTIs. It is worth noting that D-mannose has long been studied due to its remarkable UTI-fighting effects.
