Study Warns Six Hours of Sleep Loss Increases Diabetes Risk

(Newswire.net — October 12, 2022) Orlando, FL — Today, more and more experts are warning against sleep deprivation as it is linked with a variety of undesirable health issues.

A study was carried out and published in the American Journal of Physiology-Endocrinology and Metabolism. 

In this research, the investigator found that losing even just six hours of sleep increases the odds of having diabetes. This is due to the fact that deprivation of sleep has the ability to alter liver metabolism and fat content. 

The investigators particularly revealed that a loss of a single night’s sleep may impact the ability of the liver to actually produce glucose and process insulin. This, in turn, increases the odds of metabolic diseases like hepatic steatosis (fatty liver) and type 2 diabetes.

In previous research studies, deprivation of sleep has long been linked with less movement, eating more, and having increased odds of developing type 2 diabetes. 

In this study, the investigators looked into two groups of mice, and one group was kept awake for six hours each night (“sleep deprivation”). The control group, on the other hand, was allowed to sleep as desired. 

Prior to the study, both groups were given unlimited high-fat food and sugar water — mimicking lifestyle-related food choices that people make. During the sleep/wake period, the subject animals had reduced opportunities for physical activity.

It has been particularly found that there were significantly higher blood glucose levels in the sleep deprivation group than in controls after one six-hour session of wakefulness. Further, there was an increase in Triglyceride (fat) levels and the production of glucose in the liver in the sleep deprivation group after a single wake period. 

The researchers further found a link between elevated liver triglycerides and insulin resistance, or the inability of the body to process insulin properly. They even found that lack of sleep altered the expression of certain enzymes regulating liver metabolism in the sleep-deprivation group.

The number of people who have inadequate sleep continues to increase. It is important to note that there are various factors that contribute to sleep health issues. There are also some remedies like the use of curcumin researchers found to be helpful for sleep improvement.
