( — October 17, 2022) Orlando, FL — The scientific community has long been studying the influence of the gut and various aspects of health. In a study, the investigators found a potential link between gut bacteria and restless legs syndrome.

This study was spearheaded by Daniel Jin Blum, Ph.D., D.B.S.M., an adjunct clinical instructor at Stanford Center for Sleep Sciences and Medicine in Redwood City, California.

It has particularly shown the link between high levels of rare gut bacteria and restless legs syndrome.

According to the researchers, this condition called small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) may be more common among individuals with restless legs syndrome (RLS).

The findings have shown that all seven participants with RLS had SIBO. It is worth noting that in contrast, the prevalence of SIBO is estimated to be no more than 15 percent in the general population.

This condition called SIBO develops when the rare gut-residing bacteria are over-represented in the gut. On the other hand, this sensorimotor disorder called RLS is characterized by a strong and nearly irresistible urge to move the limbs.

It is often accompanied by other uncomfortable sensations. The symptoms start or worsen during

periods of rest or inactivity such as lying down or sitting. Partial or total relief can be achieved by movement, such as stretching or walking.

One of the essential characteristics of RLS is that it usually occurs in the evening. Individuals who have low iron levels in their brains may be at a heightened risk of RLS. It is worth noting that according to researchers, brain iron deficiency may come secondary to dietary iron deficiency or, potentially, gut inflammation.

In this study, the participants were made to complete questionnaires concerning sleep as well as SIBO symptoms.

It is an undeniable fact that the gut has a strong influence on various aspects of health. This particularly includes maintaining gut bacterial balance. There are formulas like the use of Divine Bounty Digestive Enzymes that could be helpful in protecting and maintaining gut health.
