A Study Shows Gut Bacteria May Mitigate Heart Disease Risk

(Newswire.net — October 19, 2022) Orlando, FL — Bacterial balance in the gut has long been a subject of research due to its relevance on various aspects of health. Individuals who want to enhance the protection of their hearts may benefit from taking care of their gut.

This is according to a study carried out by Oregon State University researchers.

In this study, the investigators were able to find that gut bacteria linked with an animal-based diet may mitigate cardiovascular disease risk.

They have particularly found that there is a type of common gut bacteria that appears to help in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. It is worth noting that researchers have found a link between these bacteria and inflammation, abscesses, bowel disease, and cancer.

The results of this research recommend the possibility of probiotic treatments for atherosclerosis, which is associated with diet, age, smoking, and a range of genetic causes. It is worth noting that atherosclerosis pertains to a dangerous buildup of fats, cholesterol, and other substances in arteries that cause strokes and heart attacks.

It is worth noting that diets loaded with animal-based foods have long been known to be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. This is due to the fact that such diets are a major source of TMA or trimethylamine, which is converted by the liver to another compound, TMAO,

According to experts, TMAO promotes the buildup of fatty plaque in arteries. TMAO is short for trimethylamine-N-oxide.

“The connection between TMAO and cardiovascular disease has tended to focus the conversation on how animal-based diets cause negative health consequences,” said Veronika Kivenson.

Kivenson is the study’s lead author and a postdoctoral fellow at the OSU College of Science.

“But in analyzing data from foundational gut microbiome studies, we uncovered evidence that one type of bacteria associated with meat consumption can take the TMA, as well as precursors to TMA, and metabolize them without producing any TMAO. That means those bacteria are in effect severing a key link in the cardiovascular disease chain,” she added.

The findings of this interesting research were published in mSystems.

More and more research studies are stressing the relevance of taking some measures in protecting and enhancing gut health. This is due to the fact that it has a strong influence on various aspects of health.
